To Cleveland-based advertising agency Marcus Thomas, it just seemed natural to draw comparisons between the linemen of football and the linemen of FirstEnergy in the agency’s new spot for the Akron-based electric utility.
Both groups of linemen face tough odds. Both work out in the rain, snow, storms. Both go to work often taking a back seat to others who seek the limelight. In the gritty 30-second TV spot, the agency called “Utility Players. Power Game,” Marcus Thomas uses powerful locker-room visuals to set the stage of a team about to do battle in the elements, with a voice-over befitting any big game. Late in the spot it’s revealed that this team of grizzled combatants isn’t rumbling on to the gridiron – this team is heading out to do battle against Mother Nature. And victory isn’t scoring more points than your opponent; victory is keeping the power flowing.
The spot was created was a clever way to remind customers that FirstEnergy teams are always working to keep the power on and to add value to the company’s official sponsorships in their marketing regions. It will run in stadiums and within broadcast availabilities tied to those partnerships where FirstEnergy is an official sponsor. It is also supported by print and digital ads.
